A Good Car Stereo System – Everything You Need to Know

Car stereo systems have changed drastically over the last few decades. The ubiquitous AM and FM radio and maybe the additional cassette or CD player has now been replaced by sophisticated systems that can stream music and even play videos on built-in screens.
Despite the vast improvements of the standard car stereo, though, the core pieces of equipment needed by the system fundamentally remains the same. So regardless of how simple or sophisticated you want your car's sound setup to be, you will need the following:

•The Stereo or Head Unit (HU) makes up the main brain of your car's sound system.  Without a good stereo unit, you won't get good performance and it will not matter how good the rest of the components are in your car audio system.  Most modern car stereo systems come with multiple functionalities and can play back from your CDs or from other digital media sources via an auxiliary input. An even more advanced development is ‘Digital Head Units’ that mount in your dashboard and offer more integrated functionality over your standard car stereo—such as GPS and navigation capabilities, backing camera display, digital video playback, etc.

•Adding an external amplifier to your standard setup will give you the benefit of better sound quality as 3rd party amplifiers often come with better components and more power to drive and saturate your speakers and make them perform at their best.

•Upgraded speakers make up the third most important part of a good car audio setup. Speakers transform your audio signals into sound, so the better your speakers are, the better sound output you are going to enjoy. Adding a larger subwoofer or bass speaker improves the sound by giving you lower end and mass for a bigger and fuller tone.
