Fog Lights: A Great Add-on for Automotive Lighting

Fog lights do not come standard in many vehicles, but they are sometimes available as an added feature in top-of-the-line automobiles. That's why some people are questioning the necessity of using these accessories. Many are also confused about how and when to use them. Unlike headlights which are regularly used, fog lights are only useful in specific situations. They only come in handy during poor weather conditions and in situations where fog and mist may impede the driver's vision.

Difference between headlights and fog lights

There's a lot of arguments as to why fog lights are necessary. But the major point of those who are in favor is that these added accessories also add driving safety. Regular headlights aren't good enough for driving situations or places where fog, mist, and dust are present. Instead of helping you see better, the headlights may make the situation worse. They tend to cast a beam that is too wide, causing light to reflect back to the eyes and impede the driver’s vision. On the other hand, fog lamps cast beams of light at a steeper angle. This allows the driver to see the road ahead much clearly.

When to use fog lights

Fog lamps tend to be much brighter than headlights. It can dilate the eyes of drivers of oncoming cars, blind them temporarily, and may lead to accidents. That's why you should only use them when it's foggy outside. Never switch your fog lights on unless the situation calls for it. Otherwise, the authorities may call you out and confiscate your fog lights for not following road policies.

So, do you need to buy fog lights? That really depends on how you use your vehicle and where you drive. The key is to use them sparingly. Before buying your fog lights, you should also familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations mandated by the LTO.
